Whitley Bay Light Parade

Saturday 21st April 2018

Welcome to the Whitley Bay Goldwing Light Parade Home Page 2020

Sorry Event has been cancelled
Message from the organisers of Whitley Bay Light Parade 2020

As you know the government has issued new rules of no more than 6 in a group. This has led to confusion and people are literally taking this as events of over 6 cannot happen. North Tyneside Council were still keen to have the socially distanced event to carry on. However our biggest concern was that if the Police went past and saw a load of bikes together they would start to issue fines. The police when contacted said look on the government website.

Both the RNLI and the Royal British Legion Riders have cancelled all events, this means that we would not have any marshals.

For these reasons we have had no alternative but to cancel the light parade.

Because of the Coronavirus, the government decided to give out grants to councils who put in cycle lanes. This also has happened here and has given us months of hard work to get permission to use the cycle lane. While we were told that we could use it initially, we then had to keep modifying risk assessment forms, method statements and so on, we only just had final approval the day before the groups of 6 law was announced.

The Park Dean Holiday Park will remain open under their covid19 restrictions. The caravan park is unlikely to issue refunds or transfers but please feel free to contact them. Our suggestion would be to still come along and enjoy a weekend break, the organisers will also be there all weekend. Sadly, it also means we cannot do any rides out as i am not sure how the Police would handle a large group of motorcycles. There is however loads of stuff to go and see around the area.

We are absolutely gutted that the event once again has been cancelled in the 11th hour and while the event was going to get run under strict covid measures, we feel because of the clear as mud law change from the government that this is open to interpretation, we simply cannot take the chance to move on with this.

So our sincere apologies but due to lack of support, ambiguous statements about the  groups definition I do hope you understand our decision but remember please come up if you have booked a caravan and have a socially distanced weekend break.

regards .......Micky, Derek and Christine

On this website you will find all the details for the light parade. There's information for the members of public as well as the Goldwing owners who want to take part in the event.

In the Goldwing Community there is already a number of established Light Parades throughout the UK. These can be found at  Hunstanton, Shrewsbury, Llandudno, Berwick, Scarborough & Skegness. Now for the third year we are proud to announce the Whitley Bay Goldwing Light Parade 2020 to be held on Saturday 28th March.

Michael Price is the Events and Runs organiser for Border Wings, he came up with the idea of having our own North East event. Border Wings is part of the Goldwing Owners Club of Great Britain and this will now make Whitley Bay, the 4th light parade run under the GWOCGB umbrella.

The Goldwings will come from all parts of the UK. Many of the bikes have state of the art lighting systems, computer controlled and cost thousands of pounds that adorn their bikes. Its truly a sight to behold, don't take my word for it, search on you tube for Goldwing light parade and you will find a whole host of videos to watch. But its even better to come along yourself and see the event.

The event will be in two parts. The first being a static display and we are pleased to announce this will again be on The Links right next door to Spanish City between 10am - 4pm. You will be able to get up close to the bikes, talk to the owners and ask questions. The main part though is the light parade itself. The bikes will start to arrive at  6.30pm and the parade will leave at 7.30pm from the Briardene Car park. The route chosen will be to turn left and go along the coast, through Cullercoats to Tynemouth, where the bikes will turn round on Front Street and head back along the same route, returning back to the Car park which is located is located on the A193     coast road                                                                                                                                                       between Spanish City and St Mary's Lighthouse.

Now for all the Goldwingers who are saying, where on earth is Whitley Bay. Well its on the North East Coast just North of Newcastle and the River Tyne on a map. Its a beautiful coastline with hopefully the recently refurbished Spanish City complex. You can see the image of the building on the flyer behind the illuminated wing.

Over the years a lot of money has been collected for charity at the other light parades. We are collecting in aid of the Tynemouth RNLI. The event is FREE but it would be really great if you could donate to this worthy cause. The RNLI stand will also be there during the static event as well as collection buckets

Accommodation has been arranged with the Whitley Bay Caravan Park. This is the second year we have used the Park after a year away. We have negotiated a special deal with the Caravan Park and will have a Static light display on the Friday night and Awards night on the Saturday in the lower bar. There's also a selection of other hotels including the Premier Hotel as well as B&Bs. But we do hope you consider staying at the caravan park.  We have also negotiated a 15% discount for wingers who would like to stay at the Caravan Park, check out the accommodation page for full details.
